Celtic Hammered By Ajax In Como Cup

It’s been a night to forget for Celtic in the Como Cup. Football on the lake took place in a beautiful setting but the result tonight was an ugly 5-1 in Ajax’s favour.

The Hoops started the game well and should have opened the scoring when Maeda squared the ball to Yang, whose effort thundered against the crossbar from close range.

Ajax took the lead shortly after that missed chance, but Celtic soon drew level when Tierney played an exceptional through ball and Yang made no mistake on that occasion.

The first half was productive and close fought. The score at the break was level. The second 45 was very different.

Less than 2 minutes after the restart, Celtic trailed. Poor passing and defending was to blame on that occasion. That in itself was the order of the rest of the game – slack passing and players being given space to pick their spot.

Only Hatate had a good opportunity to score at the other end, but his attempt to give the goalkeeper the eyes didn’t quite come off.

Ajax added three further goals to round off a hammering, but fortunately pre season results count for little and the game gave Celtic players an opportunity to build fitness in what is their penultimate friendly prior to the league campaign commencing next weekend.

There was also positives in the sense that Carter-Vickers returned to the field after undergoing his recent treatment.

The Bhoys will now take on Al Ahly in the final Como Cup clash on Saturday evening.

This is what happens when you populate your squad with buys from Poundland. Celtic were outclassed and it’s an omen for the season ahead unless that Board start spending on some serious quality players. Absolutely humiliating!

  2. Idah worst Ive seen him ralston poor not many were good a game to far yes a centre forward that can take the ball in like ajax number 9 who a real battle with scales held scales of the ball but scales never get him turn

    • Lubo's Boots on

I know it’s “only” preseason but big Idah has so far shown just about nothing in any game, and I’m one of his supporters. I’ll root for him until I’m …. green … in the face. But he needs to turn a corner quickly. There’s no reason at all right now to start Kenny v St Mirren. Or Maeda with Yang and Jamesey out wide.

    • Terrible performance from the hoops. Adam Idah is just not cutting it. Looks a poor striker. Daizen Maeda looks like he’s just going through the motions while waiting for his transfer.

Let’s remember that Idah was valued at around £3m when Celtic bought him, yet the club paid three times his worth. He was £3m for a reason and he spent most of his time with Norwich on the bench for a reason. The reason is he’s average. Same with Engels. Who thought he was worth £11m? He’s a £3m player max. As for CCV, he’s another overrated player. And don’t get me started on Trusty and Scales – Nawrocki was far superior to both. It’s not all just about underperforming players though, Rodgers himself is overrated as a manger. He’s a hasbeen who employs boring back to middle, middle to back tactics in every game. He has no plan b and no imagination. He has this cult-like reputation in Scotland because he has done well in the lowly SPFL. Just think about it, he wasted £25m on Engels, Idah and Trusty and he got rid of Nawrocki, the best of his 3 CBs. He hasn’t a clue.
