22nd December – Five Memorable Celtic Moments on this Day

Five memorable Celtic moments, with a nod to the late Celtic Historian and Celtic Star legend David Potter, on this day starting on 22 December 1894…

Jimmy Blessington scored

ONE – SATURDAY 22 DECEMBER 1894 – With every successive week that passes, it looks less and less like Celtic are going to repeat their successes of the last two years and win the Scottish League. Today in a howling gale before a minuscule crowd at Celtic Park, Celtic can only draw 2-2 against St Mirren with goals from Jimmy Blessington and Johnny Campbell. Hearts look as if they might be the likely champions of the Scottish League this year.

TWO – SATURDAY 22 DECEMBER 1945 – As the first peace time Christmas approaches, Celtic at last deliver a victory to their fans after three successive draws. It is not a spectacular victory however, as they need a Matt Lynch penalty to deliver the points at Douglas Park, Hamilton.

Dom Sullivan scored

THREE – SATURDAY 22 DECEMBER 1979 – Celtic often get it tough against Morton and today is no exception. But they do win through in the end with goals from Dom Sullivan, Tom McAdam and Johnny Doyle. Normally attendances a couple of days before Christmas are poor, but today the crowd is 27,000, a tribute to how well Morton have been playing.

FOUR – TUESDAY 22 DECEMBER 1987 – A brilliant late Paul McStay strike seals a well-merited Celtic 2-0 win at Brockville against Falkirk before 12,000 fans on a mild midwinter night. Andy Walker had scored the first goal against the Bairns of Falkirk.

Jiri Jarosic scored

FIVE – SATURDAY 22 DECEMBER 2007 – It is a far from impressive performance at Celtic Park today as Celtic can only draw 1-1 against Hibs, and they are indebted to a late equaliser from substitute Jiri Jarosic to do so. Coming on the back of a 2-3 defeat by Inverness, this leads to an apprehensive Christmas for Celtic.
