A look back to 2nd April 1988, Hibs 0:2 Celtic…
A huge Celtic travelled through to Easter Road on this day in 1988 for a crucial game in the club’s Centenary season. Celtic’s previous two away games were at Ibrox and Pittodrie and Billy McNeill’s side won them both defeating Rangers by 2-1 then Aberdeen by 1-0 on a night, as we featured earlier this week, the fans refused to leave after the game and the Polis turned out the lights leaving us signing in the dark with lighters making it look like “a Barry Manilow concert!”

So next up was Hibs with former Celt Alan Sneddon on the team and Andy Goram in goals. Indeed there is a great photograph on The Celtic Wiki of the Celtic support in full voice knowing that the title was getting ever closer and the only player in view is Goram, bet he loved that!
Peter Grant sent Celtic on own way to the title with a goal that even Paul McStay would have been proud of. Andy Walker, having his best season as a Celtic player added a second late in the game to ensure the win with his 28th goal of the season and just when we thought the day couldn’t get any better the Easter Road announcer told us that the final score from Ibrox was Rangers 1 Hearts 2 and the roar from Easter Road was probably heard in Govan!
The Centenary Celts were now just three points away from the title with five games remaining! A glorious season to have been there every step of the way!

As someone in mid 5os and been a celt all my life i don’t think I ever enjoyed another season the way i did the centenary one, even when we lost which wasn’t often you still knew that it was going to happen, everything was right for us and team was stacked bu Celtic fans that truly wanted to win it for the club and the fans. Big Billy being back in charge it was just meant to happen for us. Ynwa
