Celtic has missed the boat on Lennon Miller, but would he have made a difference to our team?

Lennon Miller of Motherwell was a Celtic target back in January

Lennon Miller of Motherwell, a Celtic target back in January, with many supporters myself included wanting the club to make a move for the talented teenager this summer. That though has not happened, possibly because the player’s advisors has made it known that the player wishes to play his football abroad.

Things never even got to the bidding stage, and if we were still interested it’s now too late as we’ve missed the boat as the Scotland international is now in Italy ready to sign for Serie A side Udinese.

Whilst Miller is a talented player with great potential, the big question is, would he have made an instant impact on Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic side?

Our midfield is one of the strongest areas of our squad, and Miller would undoubtedly have added to the depth of quality, but is he currently good enough to dislodge any of our current first choice trio of Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate and Benjamin Nygren?

No would be the honest answer. Even those currently seen as second choice such as our record signing Arne Engels, a Belgian internationalist with Bundesliga experience, and Portuguese under 21 skipper Paulo Bernardo aren’t guaranteed regular game time, so why would Miller be any different?

Even Luke McCowan who is a talented player with a wealth of experience in the Scottish game isn’t guaranteed a start such is our talent in the middle of the park.

No one is denying that Miller would have been a great addition due to his ability and potential, but we need first team ready players, and the Scotland man is far from ready to step straight into the Celtic starting XI and certainly would have struggled for starts.

He would have been well aware of that himself and could have looked at the example of David Turnbull who left Motherwell for Celtic as a greatly hyped midfielder who ultimately failed to live up to the hype.

Lennon Miller can develop as Udinese and could one day find his way back to Celtic Park, just like Paul Lambert did. And at that stage he’d be more than ready to wear the Hoops and make a major impact.

Best of luck to the boy.
