Jakob Breum latest as Celtic indulge in lowball dithering

Celtic’s search for attacking reinforcements has encountered a significant hurdle, with Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles refusing to budge on their valuation of Danish under-21 international Jakob Breum. That’s according to Stephen McGowan writing in The Herald today…

‘Go Ahead, meanwhile, have already rejected a number of financial proposals from Celtic for Danish under-21 international Breum.

In the market for wide players after selling Nicholas Kuhn to Como for £17m and losing the services of the injured Jota until early next year, the Parkhead club opened with £1.5million last month.

Despite Celtic upping their original proposal to £1.75million plus add-ons, then putting £3million on the table, the Dutch Cup holders have placed a price tag of Euros 7.5million (£6.5million) on a player signed from Danish club Odense in the summer of 2023.”

PSV placed Breum high on their shortlist of summer signings before deciding to pay £15million for AZ’s Ruben van Bommel instead. Claiming their valuation is fair and realistic senior figures inside Go Ahead maintain that the player will not be allowed to leave for a knockdown fee.

Celtic also have a long-term interest in Antwerp’s Belgian winger Michel-Ange Balikwisha.’

Celtic are certainly looking to strengthen their options out wide following the £17 million sale of Nicholas Kuhn to Italian side Como and the long-term injury to Portuguese winger Jota, who is expected to be sidelined until early 2026. It seems Celtic identified Breum as a target, submitting an initial offer of £1.5 million last month.

That figure was later increased to £1.75 million plus performance-related add-ons, and more recently, according to the report, Celtic raised their bid to £3 million. However, the Dutch Cup holders have set a firm asking price of £6.5m for the 20-year-old.

Go Ahead Eagles, it seems, insist their valuation is both “fair and realistic,” pointing to the player’s rising profile and the interest he has attracted from major clubs across Europe. PSV Eindhoven had placed Breum high on their shortlist earlier in the window but ultimately opted to sign AZ Alkmaar’s Ruben van Bommel in a £15 million deal instead.

Breum has impressed in the Eredivisie with his pace, technical ability, and versatility across the front line, quickly becoming one of the standout young players in Dutch football. With PSV now out of the race, Celtic may remain the only club actively pursuing the winger, but they have yet to meet Go Ahead’s valuation — and time may be running out.

In parallel, Celtic continue to monitor other wide options. One long-standing target is Belgian winger Michel-Ange Balikwisha of Royal Antwerp, although it remains unclear whether the club will reignite interest with a formal approach this summer, that one seems very much to have been left hanging of late, perhaps a waiting game is in play if Breum is the target.

For now, Celtic’s pursuit of Jakob Breum appears to be at a crossroads. Unless Celtic side are willing to significantly raise their offer, Go Ahead Eagles are unlikely to entertain further negotiations. With Champions League qualifiers looming and Brendan Rodgers keen to bolster his squad, a decision will have to be made soon — dig deeper for Breum or move on to alternative targets.

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.

Why do we even bother debating this any longer.
Our recruitment system, negotiating tactics, sell before you buy a replacement philosophy are bordering on scandalous for a club of our supposed size.
Every year it is the same. They talk the talk but fail spectacularly in backing it up.
They hoard cash on a grotesque scale continually bleating about a “rainy day” fund yet the fund is never touched because when it is required these charlatans just sell another player.
    This Board need chased.
Our media department need a rocket as well: we’ve invested in a new training complex, the biggest infrastructure development since Lennoxtown and we’re having to rely on third party bloggers to keep us up to date. No one is even sure if it is open.
There is constant talk of our renewed agreement with Adidas yet, as far as I know, it has never been officially announced. It certainly hasn’t been announced to the Stock exchange which it really should be as it will have a serious affect on the balance sheet.
Amateur talent night. It really is just as well that we don’t have a £40M game just four weeks away.
