Former Celtic FC Women player Shen Mengyu departs London City Lionesses ahead of the season kicking off. Shen departed Celtic alongside Shen Menglu last summer…

Having written their names in the Hoops history books, Mengyu left the club with one League Cup medal, two Scottish Cups and an SWPL1 winners medal. She helped the Celts to their first ever Women’s Scottish Cup and league title, and made a massive impact in the midfield, making 83 total league appearances with 27 goal contributions.

Especially during the business end of Celtic’s title winning run, she was an essential part of the squad. She was putting in very good performances regularly, linking up well with her teammates, and it thankfully paid off with the historic trophy lift at Celtic Park.
She also made history by joining the club, becoming the first-ever Chinese women’s footballer in the UK when she signed in 2021.

After her time at Celtic, she then signed for London City last year. She only managed to appear 14 times across all competitions, scoring once in the FA Women’s National League Cup.
Described as a player who brought dynamism and creativity to the midfield during her time at London City, she is the 12th player to depart the club this summer. Having won promotion to the Women’s Super League, the top flight of English football, they seem to be preparing their squad in an attempt to compete with the best of the best.
With some supporters across social media feeling that we are still missing something in the midfield, would a move to bring Mengyu back to the club be something that you would like to see?

Thank you to everyone who has already pre-ordered the late David Potter’s last ever Celtic book, Celtic in the Eighties, which will be published on the fifth day of September by Celtic Star Books. The link to pre-order your copy is below…

Yes I’d like to see Shen back at the club as she did give Celtic a lot of good options in midfield and was a key to the 2023/24 SWPL title although maybe faded a bit in 2nd half of season. However undoubtedly having her and Robertson to control things centrally would help in attack and defence and free up players like Nakao McGregor McAneny and protect the back 3/back 4
However I do worry that she played just 14 games last season for the London City Lionesses and only played there 1 season of a 3 year contract. There is also the issue of visas and work permits with her being Chinese which maybe difficult although she is part of the Chinese squad (which also is an issue however with long travel there and back on international break weeks and jet lag when comes back to Glasgow)
Not clear whether she’d see playing in SWPL as a forward step in her career at aged 23/24 and wonder whether she may play elsewhere in Europe and follow the other Shen who is now in Germany as the money and prestige is so much greater in pretty much all other central European and Scandinavian leagues
She should not be allowed anywhere near Celtic. She was a failure before and will be again.
We need to move on and get new experienced blood in or Sevco and others will hammer us. Blunt but the truth. HH
