Five memorable Celtic moments, with a nod to the late Celtic Historian and Celtic Star legend David Potter, on this day starting on 27 December 1913…

Ebenezer Owers scored four goals

ONE – SATURDAY 27 DECEMBER 1913 – It is red headed Ebenezer Owers’ big day as he scores four for Celtic at Somerset Park, Ayr as Celtic beat Ayr 6-0. Apart from the prodigious form of Owers, Celtic have now conceded only one goal since October 7, a remarkable achievement for the now legendary Shaw, McNair and Dodds.

Willie Fleming scored

TWO – SATURDAY 27 DECEMBER 1924 – The unsatisfactory year of 1924 finishes with a 2-2 draw in an entertaining game at Stark’s Park, Kirkcaldy. The crowd is a good one of 10,000. Twice Raith are in the lead, but twice Celtic pull them back with goals from Willie Fleming and Paddy Connolly. Both Gallacher and McGrory are long term injuries and this is seriously impairing Celtic’s League title challenge.

Willie Wallace scored twice including his 100th goal for Celtic

THREE – SATURDAY 27 DECEMBER 1969 – 1969 has been an excellent year for Celtic, and it finishes appropriately with an 8-1 defeat of hapless Partick Thistle before 30,000 appreciative fans at Celtic Park. John Hughes scores a hat-trick, Bertie Auld scores two, Willie Wallace two and Billy McNeill the other one. Some of the football is absolutely scintillating.

Charlie Nicholas scored Celtic’s consolation goal.

FOUR – SATURDAY 27 DECEMBER 1980 – A really terrible day for Celtic at Pittodrie as they go down 1-4 to Alex Ferguson’s fine Aberdeen side. Charlie Nicholas scores a good consolation goal, but the only other good point for Celtic is the behaviour and deportment of the fans who make the club proud of them by their sporting behaviour and constant support for their team throughout the game in what was a difficult day at the end of a difficult year.

With Hope in Your Heart – This last league game Celtic would lose until 2 May 1981.

Scott McDonald scored the only goal

FIVE – SATURDAY 27 DECEMBER 2008 – Scott McDonald, from a Georgios Samaras lay-off to score the only goal of the game as Celtic beat Rangers 1-0 at Ibrox. This puts Celtic 7 points ahead at the turn of the year – a dangerous position, as it would turn out! Watch this…
